Frequently Asked Questions

An assessment helps you understand the best ways for you to learn and how your ability to learn is influenced by your Learning Disability, ADHD or associated disorder.
Before classes start, contact the Accessibility/Disability Office at your college/university to ask about having your assessment done early.  NOARC sees students for assessment as soon as they have been accepted into a college or university.  This means students can have their assessment completed during the summer months.  However, assessments are completed all year long.
NOARC assessment services are available for students with suspected or previously documented learning disabilities, ADHD and associated disorders who have been accepted into or are attending any of the 11 colleges and universities in Northern Ontario:
  • Algoma University
  • Canadore College
  • Cambrian College
  • Confederation College
  • Lakehead University
  • Laurentian University
  • Nipissing University
  • Northern College
  • Sault College
  • Collège Boréal
  • Université de Hearst
The actual assessment itself can take anywhere from 6 to 10 hours and can be broken up over several appointments. Only after the assessment appointments are completed can the results be placed into a report written by a psychological practitioner.  NOARC will contact you to set up a feedback appointment once the report is written.
Unless specifically asked, you need not bring anything or anyone other than yourself to your assessment appointments.
You will be advised of the current price of an assessment when you meet with an Accessibility Advisor on your campus. The cost of an assessment will not be a barrier to students as there are multiple ways to access funding for an assessment through NOARC.  For more information on funding see Funding for your Assessment.
Two important things to do are to try to get a good night’s sleep and eat a proper meal before your appointment.  For more information on preparing for an assessment appointment see Preparing for your Assessment.
NOARC services adults who are enrolled in or accepted in a college or university program in Northern Ontario. NOARC does not see children or youth or persons outside of the postsecondary system.  If your son/daughter is soon to be attending college or university you or they may contact the Disability/Accessibility office on their campus to initiate a referral to NOARC.
NOARC completes assessments all year long for individuals who are enrolled in or have been accepted into a postsecondary institution in Northern Ontario. Please contact the Disability/Accessibility office at your intended campus of study for assistance in arranging an assessment.
